At work
Melissa Hill
I grew up in Medina, Ohio and graduated from the University of Akron with a BS in Art Education and in Elementary Education. After graduating from college, I moved to Florida with my husband and taught for several years in the public schools. Our family moved to Apex, North Carolina in1998. I continued to teach in a preschool in Cary while my children were at home. But now that my children have graduated from college, I am enjoying being able to spend more of my time painting.
Growing up, I remember playing in my grandmother’s flower garden, helping in my mother’s vegetable garden and searching for the spring flowers in the woods and fields near our home. By painting plants, fruit and flowers I hope to share the pleasure that I have found in the garden and in nature. North Carolina has some wonderful gardens, parks and farmer’s markets that provide a rich source of materials for my paintings.
Currently, I am enrolled in the certificate program in botanical art and illustration offered by the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill. By enrolling in this program I hope to continue to develop as an artist, learning more about our native plants and how to show their uniqueness.
